The Trustees were delighted to award a grant towards Edie Bunker’s recent expedition to Cambodia.
Edie has kindly shared her experiences from what was clearly an unforgettable trip:
“Thank you so much for your contribution towards my trip to Cambodia. I had an amazing time and am so grateful that I got to experience it all.
While in Cambodia we did a range of activities, from exploring the cities and learning all about the history of the country to hiking through the jungle and volunteering at an elephant sanctuary.
Although it is so difficult to choose, my favourite part of the trip was the hike, as it was challenging but also such an amazing experience, and it felt so rewarding once we arrived home. For the hike we spent three days in the Cambodian jungle, spending two nights in hammocks and carrying all our own equipment and supplies. Each day we walked around 10 miles through a range of terrains and weather.
Another part of the expedition that I really enjoyed was exploring the cities, especially Siem Reap. This is where we went to Angkor Wat for sunrise, and it was so beautiful to see, as well as many of the other temples in the nearby areas.
While in the capital, Phnom Penh, we learnt all about the Khmer Rouge and Pol Pot and the many tragedies that occurred during this awful period for Cambodia. It was very moving being shown around a former prison, which was originally a school, by someone who was once a prisoner there.

We are delighted that our grant was able to contribute towards Edie’s journey and help make this wonderful opportunity possible. Her experiences of Cambodia, from the challenge of trekking through the jungle to learning about the country’s history and culture, will undoubtedly remain with her for many years to come.
